You may not be an individual marketer but I am more focused on a marketing communicator working for a brand. Throughout my studies at my undergraduate level, the plan had always been to establish myself after school but you see, there is nothing like a one-man army in marketing, that is a myth. When you practice what you know in a firm or company, you get more exposed to experiences that your individual self cannot help you achieve. That is why learning doesn’t end in the classroom, even in your various professions, you still need to learn.

They may not be new but based on my experiences as a strategic communicator, partly a PR professional, and a marketing communicator, I have put together the 6 marketing tools a marketer can use to improve their businesses and returns. In this article, we will discuss how you can use advertising, sales promotion, direct marketing, personal selling, sponsorship, and public relations collectively called the marketing communication tools for your brand to excel in 2024. I will make sure I add in-depth practical examples for you to appreciate what I need you to know as a marketing communicator.

Even though there are six, it is actually not possible to use only one marketing communication tool as a marketing communicator for a brand or company. I don’t want to confuse you now but you will get to understand this later on.

Let us begin with advertising. The previous article under this label was about how to achieve better results in advertising as a marketing communicator. If you need more information on that, you can revisit the previous post. You cannot call yourself a marketing communicator of a brand and leave out advertising in your campaigns. The excuse of some marketers is that they don’t want to spend much. Well, I believe such marketers have tried advertisements before but they did not get good results as a result of the wrong strategies they used. Advertising is a paid form of communication that usually has an identified promoter. What are some of the big brands you have heard of so far? Are they close to you or even in your country? How did you get to know about them? If you agree with me, most brands we know of today are a result of some advertisements we saw on television, billboards, newspapers, social media, and other advertising media. This shows how effective advertising has become.

You might not have the means but you must advertise your brand. That is the only way you can reach more customers each and every day. Take this website for instance, do you know that if I want to reach more audience organically, I can use paid ads also known as advertising to achieve that? Yes! Google ads, Facebook ads, Twitter ads, and the rest are all mediums I can use. In the same way, you can use this strategy to get your products or brand to reach more people out there.

The next communication tool I want us to appreciate is direct marketing. Direct marketing is a form of communication that is delivered directly to the target market or audience. Do not confuse advertising with direct marketing as there would be other terms that may even be more similar to advertising but they are totally different. With this strategy, you employ electronic media as a means to achieve your market purpose. Which telecommunication brand do you use? When was the last time you received an SMS or email from them? Yes, so those are practical examples of direct marketing. They are delivered to only you because, at that moment, they believe you are the one using your electronic device hence you will see.

Marketers can use this to engage more with their target audience. Some do that through email marketing. If there is a new product, you can broadcast that update to a lot of people at once without necessarily going to advertise. This is why sometimes you receive marketing messages that you have never engaged with. They have purchased that medium to directly reach you.

Personal selling is also another strategy a marketing communicator can utilize. This strategy is commonly connected with products that are of high value like cars, washing machines, and others. It does not mean you need to carry this stuff to people to sell, no. You can go out there, engage people directly or in person and when you have been able to use the various tactics and strategies to win the person to take an action, then personal selling has taken place. You need to be smart with this technique but don’t lie, right?

Sales promotion is another strategy that has been effectively used by many brands. With this strategy, there is a higher probability of getting immediate feedback or returns. Have you heard of any company offering a discount to buyers on some special days? That is sales promotion. This is where a marketer or business uses a discount strategy to convince customers to make a purchase. Who doesn’t like a discount anyway? This is why I said it is more effective for marketers. It doesn’t mean you should use big discounts, at least reasonable ones that won’t cause you any loss.

Sometimes, you and your brand can decide to sponsor an event or a program organized by another organization. In return, they can give you media mentions (indirectly advertising your brand without you necessarily paying for that), and add your brand to their flyers and other agreed means. This is what is termed as sponsorship. Some might say it is a risk but sponsoring an organization in the first place gives a good name to your brand, you also get more exposure especially if the program or event attracts more people. This is why you must sponsor events or programs that have large numbers on board, it will help expose your brand to that organization’s customers.

Finally, public relations which is one of my fields is also an important tip or technique that marketing communicators can use for their brands. It is all about building a reputation in the eyes of the public. You should carry out your duties professionally and credibility and trust would be achieved. The way you listen to people’s grievances and the way you carry yourself can attract more people to your brand and that is the essence of public relations.

So, like I said, you cannot use only one of these communication tools for your brand as a professional marketing communicator. You can use more to gain more better results. This I know and believe will help you and your brand achieve greater outcomes. Happy marketing!
