Tips on how to achieve good results in advertising using communication

Marketing is like public relations but the only difference is the former seeks to persuade a potential buyer or customer to take an action (buy) while the latter only works as an intermediary between the organization and its public. Every profession has its own set of principles that when professionals follow, would yield a better result for them. I particularly am a strategic communicator practitioner and I am fortunate to witness some aspects of both public relations and marketing communication. Both professions make use of communication to achieve their purposes. In this article, we will discuss how a marketing communicator can achieve a better result in advertisement using communication.

Advertisement here entails a lot of areas. It could be an in-person advertisement, digital advertisement like good ads, social media advertisement, or traditional media advertisement. I will share with you how you can effectively achieve good results as a marketing communicator to boost sales and conversions.

The first tip I will give you is to know your purpose. You should know why you want to advertise. Do you want people to see your brand, do you want people to patronize your products or what specifically is your purpose? As a marketing communicator, you must have a purpose whenever you are practicing the profession.

You must also know who your message or advert must get to. In other words, you must know your target audience. You can see that the work of a PR professional and a marketing communicator seems to be similar? As I stated earlier, the course I offered at my undergraduate level, strategic communication exposed me to more areas under public relations and marketing so I know what I am saying here. With this, a marketer must conduct research to identify the audience who are potential customers and are likely to listen and patronize whatever products you advertise out there. Even on social media and Google ads for instance, before you pay to advertise your brand or products, you are asked who your targeted audience is. Are they students, lecturers, elites, parents, or who specifically? You must know and then we proceed to the next step or tip.

You must present a clear message. You should start with a clear brief to engage your audience to get more interested in whatever message you have for them. This is more important if you are delivering to a live audience. You must follow through on what you say, be persistent, and let your audience know what you are talking about. They should identify your credibility in how you present your facts and arguments. When you achieve credibility with the people, there is no way your products and services will not be patronized. Also, you must focus on your target audience, don’t forget the people you are dealing with so that you won’t use certain terms that are not familiar with them.

I must be so realistic here, look do not lie as a marketer. Be real and true to your brand. Why would you have to lie in the first place? Because you do not sell genuine products or what? Some people think that the mere fact that you are a marketing communicator, you can use that to deceive your audience. That is not an act of professionalism and trust me, when people find out that you are a liar, that is the end of your brand. That is why I said earlier that you must know who your target audience is so that you do not say the wrong thing in the right place and vice versa.

Also, one thing I have noticed as a strategic communicator is that people tend to become bored when the message is too lengthy and has no breaks. You must learn to communicate little at a time thus one after the other. You don’t rap because you have mastery over communication. You must present facts one after the other at a good pace and not in a rush. This is one way I have realized people tend to pay more attention to whatever you have to offer. Even if the message is lengthy and you apply this technique, people will still be interested in what you have to offer.

In cases where you are using the digital medium to advertise your brand and products, do not forget to test ads in advance. What do I mean by this? Sometimes, you can tease the minds of your social media audience by sharing with them let’s say a flyer you want to use for an advert to receive feedback if it is good to use it. Also, some people have more experience than you in the profession, if they are within your circles, you can show them what you want to put out there and their feedback can help make it better or give you the go-ahead to put it out there. In my case, I always consulted my social media lecturer back in the day to test my ads with her. Aside from your online audience, who else can you test your ads with?

Now, I must say that when you do all these and you don’t do a follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of it, then I believe you have learned nothing new in the profession. You must develop a practical way to get feedback or you monitor to get feedback on your ads. In the case of online advertisements, you have no problem since platforms like Google Ads give you the chance to monitor your ad results. What do you do when your audience is live? Do you remember when I said before you can identify your target audience you must conduct research? Yes, through research and the feedback you get from your audience, you can deduce the effectiveness of your ad campaign as a marketing communicator.

You may have the best products and the best brand but without good communication, no one would be convinced to purchase or patronize whatever you are selling to them. This is why I have personally through my years in strategic communication put together some tips on how you can achieve good results in advertising using communication.
